History of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®

West Palm Beach History
Janelle and Joel Dowley are the franchise owners of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Palm Beach. We were born and spent most of our lives in Michigan. In 1986, we hired TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® to move us into our new home in Michigan. At the time, it was only a small, local company run by a middle-aged single Mom in our home town. We were impressed with the service. Over the years, we watched as that little company grew into what it is today (see below).
After raising our two daughters and selling a previous business, we decided to open our own TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise. After much investigation, we chose Palm Beach and came here in 2005. Since then TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Palm Beach has helped thousands of businesses, individuals and families move their livelihoods and lives.
We are proud of the fact that we are a locally owned, woman-owned business (Janelle is the Chairman, President and majority shareholder). We are both active in the daily management of our business. We invite you to call us with your questions, comments, criticisms and compliments. We want to be your “Movers Who Care®”.
Corporate History
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® started in the early 1980s as a way for two brothers to make extra money while in high school. Nearly 20 years later, the company has grown to more than 200 locations worldwide.
Brothers Jon and Brig Sorber started moving people using an old pickup truck while their mom, Mary Ellen Sheets, developed a logo to advertise in a weekly newspaper. This same stick-men logo is used today on every truck, sign and advertisement.
When the brothers left for college, Sheets continued to field calls for moving services while working another full-time job. She finally made things official in 1985 by purchasing a 14-foot truck for $350 and hiring a couple of movers. That $350 is the only capital Sheets has ever invested in the company.
Eventually, Sheets decided to franchise the company, and in 1989, she awarded the first location outside of Michigan to her daughter, Melanie Bergeron, in Atlanta, Ga.
Brig and Jon Sorber eventually returned to team up with their mom and older sister in the mid-1990s. Brig Sorber now serves as the president and chief executive officer, and Jon Sorber is executive vice president.
Today, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is the nation's largest franchised local moving company, and it boasts a fleet of more than 1,200 trucks. The company has come a long way – and logged a lot of miles – since Sheets sketched the first "stick-men." The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system continues to pave the way for future growth and innovation in home and business moving, while maintaining a commitment to exceeding customers' expectations.
